With almost 4 million inhabitants, capital city Madrid is Spain's largest city. It wasn't named capital until 1562, but fret not, as what Madrid lacks in medieval architecture and ancient history it more than makes up for in countless other ways. The city boasts some of the world's very best museums, Europe's craziest dusk-til-dawn nightlife, and all sorts of hip neighborhoods- each with its own distinct character and offerings.
While urban Madrid's huge size may seem daunting at first, it's extremely pedestrian-friendly and the city has a high ratio of green to concrete, with vast parks such as the "Retiro," "Parque del Oeste" and "Casa del Campo." Chill out in the grass or join in the Sunday afternoon drum circles at the Retiro, then head to the nearby Prado Museum, which features the most important works of Goya, Velázquez, El Greco and many more. Art-lovers can also revel over the collection of modern works by Picasso, Dalí, Miró and others at the Reina Sofía Museum.
What's more, Madrid is conveniently located right smack in the middle of the peninsula, making it a great jump-off point for traveling. Ski slopes are a mere hour from Madrid, and no Spanish destination is more than a 6-hour ride away.
However, you might not even want to leave once you get immersed in football games, concerts, theater shows, bullfights and taking to the streets drinking on terraces and partying 'til the sun comes up! Plus, the city is known for its friendly, welcoming people- they'll help you feel like a "madrileño" in no time!
